Quick answer: It depends on the form. A paper PSLF form goes to the Department of Education, not your servicer: fax 540-212-2415, the number printed on the current form. Everything else (an IDR plan request, deferment, forbearance) goes to your loan servicer, and each has its own fax; the table below has them. Before faxing either, know that StudentAid.gov handles both online, and the Department says that route is faster.
Student loans are where the wrong fax number is easiest to pick up honestly. The Department of Education now runs PSLF itself, loans move between servicers, and older advice still points PSLF forms at MOHELA. We took every number below from the current form or the servicer’s own site on 15 October 2026.
PSLF forms: the Department of Education, not your servicer
The current PSLF & TEPSLF Certification & Application (OMB 1845-0110, expires 31 January 2027) lists three ways to return it in section 8:
- Fax: 540-212-2415
- Post: U.S. Department of Education, P.O. Box 300010, Greenville, TX 75403
- Upload: log in to StudentAid.gov and go to My Activity
The programme is the Department’s, not a servicer’s. Its PSLF article says PSLF “is fully managed by the U.S Department of Education on StudentAid.gov”, and MOHELA’s own contact page says the same. So a PSLF form faxed to MOHELA’s forms line is going to the wrong organisation.
Paper is the slow lane here. The Department recommends completing the form in the PSLF Help Tool at StudentAid.gov/pslf, where you and your employer can both sign electronically. Its guidance says uploading a signed PDF increases processing time compared with signing digitally. Fax makes sense when your employer will only sign on paper, which happens.
If you do fax, send the whole form in one transmission, pages in order, with any documents the form asks for. The Department doesn’t publish a fax confirmation, so keep your transmission report with your copy.
Federal loan servicers: where to fax everything else
From each servicer’s own website, 15 October 2026. Use the number for your servicer, not the one at the top of a search result.
| Servicer | Fax | What it’s for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| MOHELA | 866-222-7060 | Forms (“Mail or fax your forms to”) | MOHELA’s site gives two different international fax numbers, so call before using either |
| Nelnet | 877-402-5816 | General correspondence | Nelnet lists post-only addresses for deferment, forbearance and repayment-plan forms, and for discharge claims |
| Aidvantage | 866-266-0178 | Department of Education loans | International: 001-570-706-8563 |
| Edfinancial | 800-887-6130 (toll-free) or 865-692-6348 | Letters and documents | Military service members: 866-425-2473 |
| CRI | 888-462-4163 | Deferment, forbearance, repayment plans, enrolment status | Discharge, forgiveness and bankruptcy claims: 888-462-4153 |
| Default Resolution Group | None published | Defaulted loans | Post only: PO Box 5609, Greenville, TX 75403-5609. Phone 1-800-621-3115 |
Which servicer is yours?
Your servicer is the company that sends your bills, and it may have changed since you last looked: the Department moves loans between servicers. Log in to StudentAid.gov to see it on your dashboard, or call the Federal Student Aid Information Center on 1-800-433-3243 (1-800-4-FED-AID). The Department keeps a list of current servicers with links to their official websites. Go through that list rather than a search result, because look-alike “student loan help” sites are common.
Income-driven repayment requests on paper
The IDR Plan Request form (OMB 1845-0102) doesn’t print a fax number. Section 7 says to return it to your loan holder, which means your servicer, using the numbers above. Two things the form itself says are worth knowing before you fax it:
- It asks you to leave out pages 10 to 19 when you mail or fax it back, so send the pages before and after only.
- It says it’s faster and easier to complete the form online at StudentAid.gov.
The Department’s IDR FAQ (August 2026) says paper is for borrowers who can’t complete the online application, and that servicers process most IDR applications within a few weeks, sometimes longer. While one is being processed, your loans may go into a processing forbearance, which it says won’t last longer than 60 days.
Before you press send
- Download the form fresh from StudentAid.gov rather than reusing an old copy. The PSLF form in use now expires on 31 January 2027.
- Put a cover sheet on top with your name, the servicer or “U.S. Department of Education”, the form name and the page count. Our cover sheet generator does it in a minute.
- Use black ink and sign where the form asks. Faxes go out in black and white, and pale signatures sometimes don’t survive.
- Keep the transmission report. If your forgiveness count or your plan date is ever disputed, the timestamp is your evidence.
With no fax machine at home, Municorn Fax sends from your phone: scan the signed pages with the camera and keep the delivery report. Your first single-page test fax is free. EveryFax sends from your email and has a two-week trial, which suits an employer’s HR office sending PSLF forms in bulk.
Can I still fax my PSLF form to MOHELA?
You shouldn’t. The current PSLF form sends paper copies to the U.S. Department of Education: fax 540-212-2415. MOHELA’s site says PSLF is managed by the Department, not by MOHELA.
Is there one fax number for all federal student loans?
No. PSLF forms have their own Department of Education fax. Everything else goes to whichever servicer holds your loans, and each servicer publishes its own number.
Does my employer have to sign on paper?
No. If you start the form in the PSLF Help Tool, your employer can sign electronically and it goes straight to the Department. Paper and fax are there for employers who won’t, or can’t, sign online.
How long does a faxed PSLF form take?
The Department doesn’t publish a fax processing time. It does say a digitally signed form is processed faster than an uploaded PDF. Track it under My Activity on StudentAid.gov.
Why doesn’t the Default Resolution Group have a fax?
It doesn’t publish one. Its contact page gives a postal address, phone numbers and an email address that doesn’t accept attachments. If your loans are in default, call 1-800-621-3115 before posting anything.
