What it changes

The recipient gets a stack of paper, with no way to know that page four was meant to come second or that page seven is a duplicate. Order matters more on a fax than anywhere else, because there is no undo at the other end. An email attachment can be reopened and scrolled; a fax is paper coming out of a tray in the order it arrived, often into a shared machine, often to someone who will file it without reading it closely. A sideways page gets turned and squinted at. A page in the wrong place gets treated as though it belongs where it landed.

Rotation is worth a particular mention. Scanners routinely produce pages at ninety degrees, and a fax machine will not straighten them — it transmits what it is given. Worse, a rotated page is often a different shape from the rest of the document, so it also gets scaled differently and can lose an edge. Fixing rotation here writes a proper rotation instruction into the file rather than redrawing the page, so nothing is degraded in the process.

Questions people ask

How do I reorder the pages?
Drag a page onto the position you want it in. On a phone that works with a finger. If you would rather not drag, put the keyboard focus on a page and hold Alt while pressing the left or right arrow. Clicking a page selects it instead, which is what the rotate and delete buttons act on — so you can rotate six pages at once rather than one at a time.
Does rearranging pages reduce the quality?
No. Pages are copied from your document into a new one as complete objects, so what comes out is the same content in a different sequence. Rotation is stored as an instruction on the page rather than by redrawing it. Open the result and you can still select text and fill in form fields — which is the test worth applying to any tool of this kind.
Can I pull out just a few pages?
Yes. Click the pages you want, then use Keep only these. That is often the point of the exercise: a clinic asks for pages two to five of a twenty-page record, and sending the whole file is both slower and a wider disclosure than was asked for. Sending only what was requested is the better habit.
Why is one of my pages sideways in the first place?
Usually a scanner that fed the page the short way, or a phone that recorded the wrong orientation. Some viewers correct it on screen using the rotation instruction in the file, which is why a document can look fine on your laptop and arrive rotated. Faxing does not correct anything, so what you see in the grid here is closer to what the recipient gets.
Should I organise before or after optimizing for fax?
Organise first. Get the document to exactly the pages you intend to send, in order and the right way up, then run the whole thing through the fax optimizer in one pass. Doing it the other way round means optimizing pages you are about to delete, and the black-and-white conversion is the slower of the two steps.
My PDF will not open here.
Almost always a password. Open it in whatever you normally use, save a copy without the password, and load that instead. We do not attempt to work around encryption on a document you may not own. Damaged files are the other cause, and re-exporting from the original source usually fixes those.
Is my document uploaded anywhere?
No. Both the page previews and the rebuilt file are produced on your own device, so nothing is transmitted anywhere and there is no server copy to delete afterwards. You can check it: load the page, disconnect from the internet, and the tool still works.
