Read this before you rely on it

An electronic signature is not accepted everywhere, and the places that refuse it tend to be exactly the places people fax. The clearest example is IRS Form 2848, the power of attorney form, which requires a handwritten signature in ink — a typed or drawn one invalidates the filing, and you will find out weeks later. Several state agencies, some courts and a number of banks take the same line on specific documents.

So check what the recipient asks for before you sign anything this way. If the instructions say wet signature, original signature or signed in ink, print it. If they simply say signed and dated, an image of your signature on the page is normally what they mean, and it is what a faxed signature has always been in practice — a photocopy of a photocopy of a pen stroke.

What it changes

The usual workaround for a form that needs signing is print, sign, scan, fax — four steps and a machine you may not own. Most free signing tools replace that with a different chore: they ask for an email address, send a verification link, and produce a document with a certificate page bolted on the back. That is a workflow designed for contracts between two remote parties, and it is a poor fit for filling in a form you are about to fax to a records department. Here there is no account and no round trip: the signature never leaves your device, and the file you download is your document with an image drawn on it.

What that also means is honest about its limits. This is not a cryptographically signed PDF and it makes no claim to be — there is no certificate, no tamper seal and no audit trail. For a faxed form that is the right trade, because a fax destroys any digital signature the moment it becomes a picture of a page travelling down a phone line. If you need a verifiable signature with an evidence trail, you need a dedicated e-signature service, not this.

Questions people ask

Is a signature added this way legally valid?
It depends entirely on the document and who is receiving it, and we are not in a position to advise on your particular case. In the US, the E-SIGN Act gives electronic signatures broad legal effect, but specific forms and agencies carve themselves out of that — IRS Form 2848 being the one people run into most. The reliable approach is to read the recipient’s own instructions and do what they ask, rather than reason from the general rule.
Where should I put the signature?
Click the spot on the page preview and it centres there. Aim to sit on the signature line rather than above it, and keep it clear of the outer half inch of the page, because fax machines trim the edges and a signature that runs off the paper is the one thing on the form that has to survive.
Can I sign more than one page?
One page per pass at the moment. Download the result, load it back in, and sign the next page — your drawn signature stays on the pad, so it is quick. Forms that need initialling on every page are better handled by a dedicated e-signature service.
Should I draw it or type it?
Draw it if you can, and use a finger on a phone rather than a mouse — the result looks far more like your actual hand. A typed signature is a name set in a script typeface; it is legible and obviously not handwriting, which some recipients accept and others query. On a fax the difference narrows, because the transmission coarsens everything.
Will the rest of the document change?
No. The signature is drawn onto the existing page rather than the page being rebuilt, so text remains selectable and any form fields you have already filled in stay filled. Nothing is flattened into an image, which is what several free tools do and what makes their output larger and unsearchable.
Is my signature stored anywhere?
No, and this matters more than with the other tools here. Your signature is a piece of personal data worth protecting, and it is never transmitted to us or anyone else — it exists in the page you have open and disappears when you close the tab. There is no account holding a copy of it. Load the page, disconnect from the internet, and everything still works.
