Nobody searches for this at a comfortable hour. It is almost always a deadline — a filing that closes at midnight, a hospital that wants paperwork before a morning appointment, a form someone forgot to mention until now. So here is what is genuinely open, what it costs, and the honest answer about which of the obvious options will waste your trip.

A note on those prices, because they are messier than most guides admit. Every one of these chains is largely franchised, and each location sets its own fax rate — UPS says as much itself, and prices in high-rent city centres run noticeably above the national average. FedEx Office is the useful exception: it publishes the fax price for each individual store on its own locator, so you can check the exact figure for the branch you are driving to. FedEx Office Is The One To Check First
Of the big chains, FedEx Office is the only one that genuinely runs 24-hour branches. They cluster where you would expect: near major airports, in downtown cores, and in dense urban districts where there is overnight demand for printing. Those locations have self-service fax machines, so there is nobody to wait for — you feed the pages in and dial the number yourself.
The catch is that this is a minority of stores, and you cannot assume. Open the FedEx Office locator, filter for stores open at the hour you actually need, and then ring the branch. Door hours and staffed hours are not always the same thing, and a self-service area can be roped off overnight even when the lobby is open. One thing worth knowing before you go: FedEx charges for a failed transmission as well as a successful one, so a wrong number costs you money as well as the trip.
The Other After-Hours Options
Beyond FedEx, three things are worth knowing about, and one of them is widely misreported.
- AIM Mail Centers. Their own site advertises 24-hour fax, and plenty of round-ups repeat that as though you can walk in at 3am. Read it properly and the claim is about receiving: their fax lines and machines run around the clock so your clients can send to you overnight, and you can use the centre’s number as your own. The counter itself keeps ordinary retail hours, and every location is an independently owned franchise. Useful if you need somewhere to receive a fax at any hour. Not a place to send one at midnight.
- Hotel business centres. The most reliable overnight option after FedEx. Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and Sheraton properties typically keep the business centre accessible to guests around the clock with a room key. If you are not a guest it depends entirely on the front desk, though a politely-asked favour at 2am works more often than you would think.
- Hospital and clinic lobbies. Machines do exist in them, and they are on all night. They are for staff, not the public, and asking a night-shift nurse to fax your paperwork is not a plan. Worth mentioning only because people do try it.
Why Most Of The Obvious Places Are Closed
The places people try first are mostly the wrong ones, and a couple of them stopped offering fax altogether without much announcement.

- Pharmacies and supermarkets have largely exited. This is the big one, because the assumption dies hard: Walgreens, CVS and Walmart no longer offer public fax services at almost all locations, whatever a years-old blog post tells you.

Type the number, digits only
Country code first, no spaces or dashes — so a US number starts with 1. Add a cover sheet if the recipient is the kind of organisation that expects one.
Send, and check the receipt
A single page is usually through in about a minute. The app stores the confirmation, which matters at 3am precisely because there is nobody to ask in the morning whether it arrived.
If It Is Genuinely Urgent
The part most guides skip: sending at an odd hour is only half the problem. The other half is whether anything is listening at the other end.
- Check the recipient’s machine is on. Plenty of offices power theirs down overnight, and a fax sent to a switched-off machine simply fails. If the deadline is a timestamp rather than an office opening, that is fine — your confirmation is the proof. If someone needs to read it tonight, ring first.
